About Ca' del Bosco

History
The story starts in 1964, when Annamaria Clementi Zanella bought a property called Ca' del Bosc at Erbusco, in Franciacorta: two hectares surrounded by oak and chestnut woods. Her son Maurizio Zanella is the current President. The first vineyards were planted in 1968 by Antonio Gandossi, who set them at 10,000 vines per hectare, a density new for Italy, and who tended them until his death in 2011.
The first wine, Pinot di Franciacorta Bianco, came in 1972, and the first sparkling wines were harvested in 1976 and sold from December 1978. In 1985 a domed cellar was dug 17 metres underground, with ageing rooms branching off it. Since 1994 the winery has belonged to Gruppo Santa Margherita while keeping its own identity.
The land and the vineyards
Today the estate farms 273.5 hectares of vineyards in Franciacorta, grouped in 13 named areas such as Torri, Belvedere and Rotonda. Chardonnay covers 165.9 hectares, Pinot Noir 69.9 and Pinot Blanc 11, with smaller plots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, Cabernet Franc and Erbamat. Viticulture has been certified organic since 2014.
The winery says that mother nature decides, and then shows how to turn grapes into wine. Grapes are picked by hand into small crates, selected bunch by bunch, and the best musts are vinified plot by plot.
The wines
Franciacorta is the core: Cuvée Prestige, the Vintage Collection, and Cuvée Annamaria Clementi, named after the founder and made as a zero dosage wine since the 2017 release. Satèn, Dosage Zéro and rosé versions sit in the range too.
The estate also makes still wines. The whites are Corte del Lupo Bianco and Selva della Tesa, and the reds include Corte del Lupo Rosso, Pinéro, Il Merlot and the Maurizio Zanella red, named for its maker.
Today
Ca' del Bosco is known for combining wine and art: it runs a sculpture award, set up in 2023, and shows sculpture and photography on the estate. Visitors can book cellar tours and a vineyard tour, and there are events during the year. The cellar also uses a washing line for grapes since the 2008 harvest and prints the exact sulphite level on each back label since 2012.
