Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore “La Grola” 2022
Wine Description
La Grola is Allegrini's single vineyard Valpolicella Superiore from the hill of the same name at Sant'Ambrogio, a site Giovanni Allegrini bought and replanted in the 1960s and one of the most admired in the Classico zone. The blend is Corvina Veronese with Corvinone and Rondinella, picked from terraced slopes and fermented in stainless steel at 20 to 25 °C for about fifteen days with gentle extraction, so the fruit of the site, not technique, leads the wine.
It pours dark ruby, with black cherry, plum, black pepper and a herbal, faintly balsamic note over supple tannins and genuine freshness. Ready on release, it gains detail over five or more years. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, opened half an hour ahead, with bigoli with duck ragù, roast guinea fowl, fegato alla veneziana, or medium aged cheeses.
Winery
The Allegrini family has farmed Fumane, in the Valpolicella Classica, since 1854, and the modern estate took shape in the early 1960s under Giovanni Allegrini, who bought and replanted the La Grola, La Poja and Palazzo della Torre vineyards. His son Franco, one of Italy's leading winemakers until his death in 2022, set the technical standard, and the seventh generation now runs the house: Francesco, Giovanni, Matteo and Silvia. Holdings reach 150 hectares between the Valpolicella Classica and Lugana, from 180 to over 500 metres, farmed under certified sustainable rules.
