Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Marta Galli” 2015
Wine Description
Marta Galli is the Amarone Le Ragose names after its cofounder, the winemaker who helped bring Negrar's high hills to notice, and it comes from the estate's steep terraces at about 350 metres. As across the house's Amarone, Corvina leads the blend with Rondinella and Corvinone; the grapes are picked by hand in September and dried in single layers into the winter, in the appassimento tradition, before a slow fermentation and a long rest in Slavonian oak casks.
Altitude gives the wine its signature: dense dark cherry and ripe berry fruit cut by real freshness, a shade of dark chocolate and sweet spice, tannins that stay firm rather than sugary. The 2015 is in a fine drinking phase and repays an hour in a decanter. Serve at 18 °C with braised game, pastissada de caval or aged Monte Veronese; it is also a natural partner for risotto all'Amarone.
Winery
Le Ragose sits at about 350 metres above Negrar, at one of the highest points of the Valpolicella Classica, on steep southwest facing terraces that the enologists Arnaldo and Marta Galli rescued from abandonment in 1969. The family still works the roughly sixteen hectares by hand, without irrigation, on clay soils rich in magnesium, calcium and iron over draining tufa. Altitude and patience define the house: careful drying of the grapes, long spells in Slavonian oak casks, and wines that favour freshness and line over sheer weight, from the Valpolicella and Le Sassine up to the long aged Amarone Riserva.
