Wine Description
Costasera Dragon Year is a limited edition of Masi's Costasera Amarone, released with a special label for the lunar year of the Dragon; what is in the bottle is the estate's Amarone Classico of the 2018 vintage. The wine follows the Costasera recipe: Corvina 70%, Rondinella 25% and Molinara 5% from slopes of the Valpolicella Classica that face west and southwest, dried on racks for three to four months and aged 28 to 30 months in stainless steel and Slavonian oak.
The style stays classical: cherry and plum jam, cinnamon and clove, velvety tannins and a warm, gently spiced finish at around 15% alcohol. Serve it at 18 °C with pastissada de caval, the old Veronese stew, with braised beef cheek, or with fegato alla veneziana from the Venetian kitchen; it also stands happily on its own with aged Monte Veronese after dinner. Give it an hour in the decanter, and keep the bottle, since the label is the point of the edition.
Winery
Masi takes its name from the Vaio dei Masi, the small valley in the Valpolicella Classica bought by the Boscaini family at the end of the eighteenth century, and it is still family run after seven generations. The house built its name on appassimento, the winter drying of grapes for Amarone and Recioto, which its technical group has studied and refined for decades, and on the recovery of old Veronese varieties such as Oseleta. Alongside the widely exported Costasera it bottles two historic cru Amarones, Campolongo di Torbe and Mazzano, and tends the vineyards of the Serego Alighieri estate, home of the descendants of the poet Dante.
