Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2017
Wine Description
Rubinelli Vajol's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico grows in the Conca del Vajol, a sheltered amphitheatre of vineyards at San Pietro in Cariano in the heart of the Classica. The five native grapes, Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara and Oseleta, are picked by hand and dried through the winter, as the appassimento tradition requires, then fermented dry and matured only in large French and Slavonian oak barrels of 30 to 50 hectolitres, the estate's choice for keeping elegance ahead of extraction.
The wine runs classical and composed: dried morello cherry and plum, sweet spice, cocoa and a balsamic thread, full bodied but fresh, with fine grained tannins. The 2017 is drinking well now after an hour in a decanter and will develop for years. Serve at 18 °C with braised beef in Amarone, roast game, pastissada de caval or aged Monte Veronese.
Winery
Rubinelli Vajol farms the Conca del Vajol, a small sheltered valley in the middle of the Valpolicella Classica at San Pietro in Cariano, where vineyards run between old brick walls, olive trees, cherry and almond blossom. The family has lived in the Valpolicella for generations; Gaetano Rubinelli laid the estate's foundations in the early twentieth century, after building the Chievo dam on the Adige. The cellar makes five wines, Valpolicella Classico and Superiore, Ripasso, Amarone and Recioto, from the five native grapes of the zone, and matures everything only in large French and Slavonian oak of 30 to 50 hectolitres.
