Venusa Rosso 2018
Wine Description
Venusa Rosso is the red of the Venissa project, grown not on Mazzorbo but on the nearby island of Santa Cristina, where the vines stand in reclaimed lagoon soil. The blend is Merlot 82% and Cabernet Sauvignon 18%, and the wine spends three years in concrete before release, a choice that keeps the fruit clean while the salt air leaves its mark. Expect dark plum and blackberry, a savoury saline undertone, fine tannins and a fresh finish that is unusual for Merlot grown this close to the sea. It sits well beside fegato alla veneziana, anatra in umido, grilled meats or aged cheeses. Serve at 16 to 18 °C; an hour in a decanter helps a young bottle.
Winery
Venissa is a wine project of the Bisol family on the island of Mazzorbo in the Venetian lagoon, a short walk from Burano. After a handful of surviving Dorona vines were found on the islands, the family replanted this native golden grape inside a walled medieval vineyard, and today the estate farms some of the lowest lying vines in the world, at and slightly below sea level in saline, tidal ground. Production is tiny and every stage is done by hand. Alongside the gold leaf labelled Venissa Bianco, the Venusa wines carry the taste of the lagoon to the table.
