Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2020
Wine Description
DianaDes makes its Amarone della Valpolicella from Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grown on pergola trained vines at around 400 metres in the limestone hills of the Valpolicella, planted at roughly 3,300 vines per hectare. The bunches dry naturally for around one hundred days to concentrate aroma and texture, and the wine then ages 30 months in French and American oak barriques with at least 24 months in bottle before release.
At 16% it is a dark, modern Amarone: currant, blackberry and sour cherry, then balsamic and spicy notes with tobacco, coffee and leather, firm structure carried without heaviness. The 2019 is ready with an hour in a decanter and will develop for years yet. Serve at 18 °C with roasted or braised red meats or game birds; it also suits a slow cooked beef cheek with soft polenta at a Venetian table.
Winery
DianaDes is a young Valpolicella label, started in 2016 by Diana, a professional sommelier and restaurateur, together with the Veronese enologist Daniele Cagliari. The project works through long standing partnerships with growers in the limestone hills around Verona rather than from owned estate vineyards, and the stated aim is precision without heaviness and structure without excess, traditional Veneto varieties read in a modern key. The short range runs from a Valpolicella Ripasso through Amarone to Zeus, a dried grape Corvinone from a single vineyard at Mezzane di Sotto.
