Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2021
James Suckling 94Falstaff 93Wine Spectator 91
Wine Description
Tommasi's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico carries the family name around the world, a measured, classical reading of Verona's great dried grape red. The house has made it this way for generations, favouring perfume and balance over sheer weight. Corvina 50%, Corvinone 30%, Rondinella 15% and Oseleta 5% from the Classica hills dry on racks in the fruttaio until February, and after a slow fermentation the wine spends three years in 35 hectolitre Slavonian oak casks and a further year in bottle before release.
At 15% it is full and warm without excess: black cherry and plum shading toward dried fruit, then leather, toasted spice and a smoky, earthy undertone over smooth tannins and a long finish. The 2021 is a young release; an hour in a decanter opens it now, and it has the balance to age for another decade. Pour it at 16 to 18 °C alongside braised beef cheek, aged Monte Veronese, or fegato alla veneziana with soft polenta.
Winery
Tommasi has been a family house since 1902, when Giacomo Tommasi bought his first vineyard in the Valpolicella Classica north of Verona. Four generations later the family farms hundreds of hectares, including over a hundred in the Classica hills around Pedemonte, yet the cellar still turns around historic sites such as Ca' Florian, Rafael on Monte Masua and the Conca d'Oro. The style is classically Veronese: long appassimento, fermentation on indigenous yeasts, patient aging in large Slavonian oak casks, and a range that runs from easy drinking Valpolicella to one of the region's best known Amarone.
