Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Léon” 2019
Wine Description
Leon is Ilatium Morini's Amarone della Valpolicella, grown by the seven Morini cousins in the hills east of Verona on clay limestone soils. The blend is Corvina 70%, Rondinella 20% and Croatina with Oseleta 10%; only healthy fruit goes into small baskets to air dry for 100 to 120 days, and after a cold maceration the must ferments slowly for 20 to 30 days with frequent pump overs. Aging runs about 30 months in new French and American oak, followed by 8 to 10 months in bottle.
The result is a vigorous ruby Amarone of plum, blueberry and dried red fruit wrapped in balsamic notes, nutmeg, cocoa and black pepper, warm and soft on the palate with elegant tannins. The 2019 is young and will build complexity for a decade or more. Serve at 16 to 18 °C after an hour in the decanter, alongside braised beef in Amarone, game with polenta, pastissada de caval, or aged mountain cheese.
Winery
Ilatium Morini is the estate of the Morini family, seven brothers and cousins who farm 45 hectares in the valleys east of Verona: Val di Mezzane, Val d'Illasi and the Valpantena. The cellar stands at Mezzane di Sotto and the vineyards, on clay limestone soils above 150 metres, are picked entirely by hand. The range runs from fresh Valpolicella through the ripasso Campo dei Ciliegi and two Amarones to the sweet Recioto Septemviri, alongside Soave whites, grappa and olive oil, with farming that leans on sustainability and cellar work that favours long, patient aging in oak.
