Valpolicella DOC Superiore “Mithas” 2018
Wine Description
Mithas is also the name Corte Sant'Alda gives its Valpolicella Superiore, a sign that the estate takes the appellation's freshest category as seriously as its Amarone. The fruit comes from biodynamically farmed parcels between 200 and 350 metres in the Val di Mezzane, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and raised in oak with the house's usual patience.
It is Valpolicella with unusual depth: dark morello cherry, plum skin, violets and white pepper over a saline, stony undertow, with firm but silky tannins and appetising acidity. The 2018 has grown into itself and is in a fine place now, with several years left to run. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, decanted briefly, with bigoli with duck ragù, roast poultry, pasta e fagioli or Venetian sarde in saor followed by grilled fish in the lighter moments. It rewards attention the way few Valpolicellas do.
Winery
Corte Sant'Alda sits in the Val di Mezzane, the quieter eastern valley of the Valpolicella, where Marinella Camerani has farmed since the mid 1980s. The vineyards lie between 200 and 350 metres on limestone rich soils, in parcels named Campi Magri, Prà Alto, Retratto and Monte Tombole, worked biodynamically and taken into the cellar with a light hand: hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts and aging in oak of varied size and age. The range runs from Valpolicella through the Campi Magri ripasso to two Amarones, Valmezzane and the estate selection Mithas.
