“Romeo” Passito Bianco Veneto IGP 2023
Wine Description
Romeo is Ca' dei Conti's white passito, a sweet wine from grapes left to dry after the harvest so that sugar, acid and aroma concentrate before pressing, the same patient logic that shapes the estate's Amarone. It is bottled as a Bianco Veneto IGP and belongs to the old Veronese habit of ending a meal with something golden and quietly sweet rather than heavy. As is typical of white passito from these hills, look for honeyed dried apricot and fig, candied citrus peel and chamomile, with the sweetness kept in line by the acidity of high vineyard fruit. The name pairs with Giulietta, the estate's dry Garganega, a wink at Verona's most famous couple. Serve it cool at 10 to 12 °C in small glasses: it suits zaleti and baicoli, the dry Venetian biscuits, a slice of pandoro in winter, or a piece of blue cheese when the evening runs long.
Winery
Ca' dei Conti is a small family winery at Tregnago in the Val d'Illasi, on the eastern edge of the Valpolicella zone. Founded in 2006 by Renzo and Loredana Rancan, brother and sister, it farms high hillside vineyards with southern exposure on lean calcareous soils, planted densely at up to 9,000 vines per hectare. The house works with a clear eye on the environment, replanting old Veronese varieties such as Croatina and Oseleta alongside disease resistant Piwi vines that cut the need for treatments; it is a member of FIVI, the federation of independent growers, and appears in the Slow Wine guide.
