Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Albasini” 2017
Falstaff 94Vitae AIS 4 Viti
Wine Description
Albasini is the wine Villa Spinosa calls the most important of the family, its selection Amarone from the Jago cru at Negrar, where east facing terraces of calcareous marine soils give wines of line as well as power. Corvina Veronese and Corvinone lead with a small share of Rondinella, as across the house range; the best bunches dry for months on racks before a slow fermentation and long aging in wood in the classical Veronese manner.
The 2017 is composed and deep: black cherry and plum moving toward dried fruit, spices, tobacco and cocoa, with firm, polished tannins and a balsamic freshness that keeps the finish straight. It drinks well now and will reward another decade. Decant for an hour or two and serve at 18 °C with braised beef in Amarone, pastissada de caval, roast game or aged Monte Veronese; it is a wine for the long, talkative end of dinner.
Winery
Villa Spinosa is Enrico Cascella Spinosa's estate at Negrar in Valpolicella, set around a historic villa and its gardens below the Masua hill. The vineyards lie on the Jago cru, east facing slopes of calcareous, marine origin soils at around 250 metres that the Guglielmi ancestors first planted in the nineteenth century. The house works classically: Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, patient aging in French tonneaux and Slavonian casks, and a range that climbs from the Jago ripasso through the Amarone Classico to the Albasini selection and the Guglielmi di Jago series, Amarones released only after ten, fifteen or twenty years.
