About Poliziano

History
Poliziano is a family estate at Montepulciano Stazione, in the province of Siena. Dino Carletti founded it in 1961, when he bought a first parcel of 22 hectares around Montepulciano. The name comes from Angelo Ambrogini, the Renaissance humanist poet born in Montepulciano, who is known as Poliziano. In the late 1970s Dino's son Federico took over the running of the winery and set a clear course: wines made only from grapes the estate grows itself. Federico, who now leads production, has worked with Francesco and Maria Stella Carletti as advisers since 2019 and 2021. Over the decades the estate has pushed from a single hillside near Montepulciano out to the coast of Maremma and the hills of Cortona.
The land and the vineyards
From the first 22 hectares the estate has grown to about 170 hectares of vines spread over four areas: Montepulciano, Montefollonico, Maremma and Cortona. The Maremma holdings were added in 1997 and the Cortona ones in 2000. Two vineyards are bottled on their own: Asinone and Le Caggiole. Asinone covers 12 hectares facing southwest on clay soil, and seven of those hectares are over fifty years old. The vineyards are worked with the Simonit and Sirch pruning method, and the winery states that its wines are certified organic from the 2021 harvest.
The wines
Sangiovese, called Prugnolo Gentile locally, leads the range. It appears in Rosso di Montepulciano (including the lighter Fiori Rossi), in Nobile di Montepulciano and in the two single vineyard Nobiles, Asinone and Le Caggiole. Le Stanze del Poliziano is a Tuscan red, In Violas is a Merlot from Cortona, and Mandrone di Lohsa is a Cabernet from Maremma. Morellino di Scansano comes from 18 hectares in Maremma and Mandrone di Lohsa from 9 hectares there. There is also a rosato, the white Ambrae, a Vin Santo di Montepulciano and an extra virgin olive oil.
Today
The winery recently marked its sixtieth anniversary, and the Carletti family still runs it. The estate receives visitors at Montepulciano, and its newer releases include a revised label for Le Caggiole from the 2021 vintage and the 2024 Fiori Rossi, an organic Rosso made in a more modern, fruit forward style.
