About La Valentina

History
La Valentina, officially Fattoria La Valentina, began in 1990 on the hills above Spoltore, a town close to Pescara in central Italy. Since 1994 the estate has been run by the brothers Sabatino, Roberto and Andrea Di Properzio, who started a development plan that year.
The first years went into studying one vineyard, Santa Teresa. After that, the brothers set themselves a clear goal: to keep improving quality and to win recognition for the DOC wines of Abruzzo.
The land and the vineyards
The vineyards sit in the hills of the Pescara area, around Spoltore and in neighbouring municipalities such as Loreto Aprutino, Moscufo and Civitella Casanova. Some plots lie close to the winery, while others were added higher up in the foothills of the Apennines.
The family says it tries to understand its terroir by respecting it, using as little technology and as few chemicals as it can. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2016.
The wines
The estate works with the grapes of Abruzzo: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo for the reds, Trebbiano Abruzzese and Pecorino for the whites, plus a rosé in the Cerasuolo style. The range is split into lines, among them Terroir and Classica, along with the Spelt wines.
The name Spelt comes from the Italian word for an ancient wheat, a grain said to have once grown where Spoltore now stands. The same word gives the town its name.
Today
Today La Valentina says it follows the principles of sustainable development and trains its staff accordingly. The three brothers still lead the work, and the aim stays the same as in the early years: wines that carry the mark of the vine and of the Abruzzo hills.
