About La Ca' Növa

History
La Ca' Növa is a family farm in Barbaresco, run by three brothers: Franco, Giulio and Pietro Rocca. It sits in a nineteenth century farmhouse on one of the roads into the village. Listings give 1950 as the year the estate began.
Like many Barbaresco families, the Roccas first sold grapes to other producers, and the sources name Gaja among them. They began to bottle under their own label later, in the early 1970s according to one account.
The land and the vineyards
The vineyards are mostly in two well known Barbaresco crus, Montestefano and Montefico. Bric Mentina is a smaller site within Montefico. Sources put the holding at 12 to 14 hectares.
The wines
Nebbiolo leads, with Barbaresco from Montestefano and Bric Mentina as the key bottlings. The estate also makes Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and a sparkling rosé. One review notes fermentation in steel and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks.
Today
Output is about 50,000 to 60,000 bottles a year by one estimate. The cellar can be visited by appointment.
