About Gualdo Del Re

History
Gualdo del Re is a winery at Località Notri in Suvereto, in the Tuscan province of Livorno. An Italian trade report gives 1953 as its founding year and says the Gestri family has owned it since 2022. The farm also opened an agriturismo with a restaurant and apartments in 2005. Enologist Barbara Tamburini has looked after vineyard and cellar since the early 2000s.
The land and the vineyards
The estate has about 27 hectares of vines on an amphitheatre of hills that looks out toward the sea and the island of Elba. The estate's own motto is that here Merlot is king, and international grapes such as Merlot and the Cabernets feel at home next to Sangiovese. Vermentino, Pinot Bianco and Aleatico are also grown.
The wines
I'Rennero is a 100 percent Merlot from Suvereto DOCG and the estate's best known wine. The winery says it is the first Italian label to reach the podium of the Mondo Merlot competition in five consecutive vintages. Cabraia is a Toscana IGT blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Gualdo del Re Suvereto Sangiovese is made from 100 percent Sangiovese.
Today
Visitors can walk the vineyards, taste in the cellar, eat at the restaurant or stay on the farm. Tamburini's approach is to let each variety show its own character.
