About Argiolas

History
Argiolas is a family winery in Serdiana, a village in the hills north of Cagliari in southern Sardinia. Most sources date the winery to 1938 and credit Antonio Argiolas as its founder. Some trace the family's vineyards further back, to his father's first purchase around 1918. Antonio's sons Franco and Giuseppe, known locally as Francolino and Peppetto, later took the business forward.
In the 1970s, when European policy paid growers to pull out vines, the family went the other way and invested in new vineyards and equipment.
The land and the vineyards
Estimates of the vineyard area range from about 230 to almost 250 hectares, spread over five estates in the south of the island. Sardinia's own grapes lead: Cannonau, Carignano, Bovale Sardo and Malvasia Nera for reds, and Vermentino among the whites.
The wines
Turriga is the best known red, a blend of Cannonau, Carignano, Bovale Sardo and Malvasia Nera, developed with the winemaker Giacomo Tachis. Vermentino di Sardegna is a regular in reviews, and the winery bottles a wide list of Sardinian reds, whites and sweet wines. Output is about two million bottles a year.
Today
The third generation now takes part in the work: Valentina, Francesca and Antonio, grandchildren of the founder, alongside Franco and Giuseppe. The winemaker named in the guides is Mariano Murru.
