About Angelo Negro

History
The Negro family has farmed in Monteu Roero since the seventeenth century. A land register of 1670 lists Giovanni Domenico Negro with vines and a cellar there, and the estate counts that year as its start. The name on the label comes from Angelo Negro, called Angelin, who began bottling wine under the family name in 1946.
His son Giovanni changed the direction of the estate. He is credited with the first dry Roero Arneis on record, made in 1971. A single vineyard Arneis from Perdaudin followed in 1983 and a sparkling Arneis made by the classic method in 1985.
The land and the vineyards
The home base is Monteu Roero, on the left bank of the Tanaro, where the sandy soils are full of marine fossils. The family later crossed the river: a Barbaresco vineyard at Neive arrived in 2000 and a Barolo vineyard at Serralunga d'Alba in 2012. Sources give the total as about 60 hectares, spread over four farms: Cascina Perdaudin at Monteu Roero, Cascina San Vittore at Canale, Cascina Basarin at Neive and Baudana at Serralunga.
The wines
Arneis is the star of the cellar, but the list covers the main Piedmont grapes: Favorita, Moscato, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Brachetto. The wines carry the Roero, Barbaresco, Barolo, Langhe and Barbera d'Alba names. Output is around 350,000 bottles a year, and roughly 60 percent go abroad.
Today
Giovanni, Gabriele, Angelo, Giuseppe and Emanuela Negro share the work, each with a different role. The estate has held a sustainability certification since 2016.
