About Tuscany Wines
Tuscany is the heart of central Italian wine, and its noble grape is Sangiovese. It reaches its most complete form in Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, a powerful, long lived red, and in the classic hills of Chianti Classico DOCG between Florence and Siena. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG completes the trio of great Sangiovese DOCGs. On the coast, Bolgheri DOC gave rise to the Super Tuscans, Bordeaux styled reds that rewrote the region's rules. Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a crisp white, is the region's other historic DOCG. The Super Tuscan movement of the 1970s proved that Tuscan land could rival the best of France with Cabernet and Merlot. Sangiovese remains the soul of the region, prized for its cherry fruit, savoury edge and firm acidity. From medieval Chianti to modern Bolgheri, Tuscany balances tradition and ambition like nowhere else.
