About Friuli-Venezia Giulia Wines
Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in the far northeast against Slovenia and the Alps, is widely held to make Italy's finest white wines. The hillside zones of Collio DOC and Colli Orientali del Friuli give whites of depth and precision from Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia and international grapes like Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio. Friulano, the old Tocai, is the regional signature, dry and almond scented. The region also gave rise to modern skin contact orange wines, pioneered by growers such as Gravner and Radikon. Cool alpine air, warm Adriatic influence and the marl and sandstone soils called ponca shape the wines' tension and length. Reds are made too, notably Schioppettino, Refosco and Pignolo, native varieties with peppery, dark fruited character. The plains produce reliable Pinot Grigio and Friulano in larger volumes. Across styles, Friuli is defined by clarity, aromatic drive and food friendly acidity.
