About Abruzzo Wines
Abruzzo lies between the high Apennines and the Adriatic coast, and its reputation rests on the Montepulciano grape. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC gives deep, dark fruited reds with soft tannins and honest value, while the same grape vinified pink becomes Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC, one of the more serious rosati in Italy. The regional white is built on Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, which runs from simple and fresh to textured and long lived in the right hands. The single DOCG, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane, sits in the hills above Teramo. Growers such as Valentini and Emidio Pepe have shown that these wines can age for decades. Pecorino and Passerina have returned to the vineyards and now give crisp, savoury whites with real grip. Much of the volume still comes from large cooperatives, so styles range from everyday bottles to benchmark cuvées. Warm coastal days and cool mountain nights keep the reds ripe yet fresh, the balance that marks the region.

Wine from Abruzzo
What is Abruzzo? The start of the south if you’re looking down, but the start of the centre if you’re looking up, the frontier region of the old Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, an area known both for its extraordinary wilderness (half of it comprises national parks) and its famous gentleness. It is home to bears and wolves, eagles and glaciers, but also beautiful old towns, delicate patisseries, strong cheeses, and, of course, wines of great unpretentious quality and the farmer’s cherishing of precision and natural flavours.
