Valpolicella DOC Superiore “Siamonoi” 2020
Wine Description
Corte Canella's Valpolicella Superiore, sold under the name Siamonoi, splits the distance between the estate's fresh Asante and its Amarone. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Croatina are hand selected at harvest and left to dry for 40 days, a short appassimento that deepens the fruit without tipping it into raisin, then the wine spends two years in French oak, 30% new, and at least two more in bottle.
The result is decisive and full of energy: ripe cherry and plum, sour cherry brightness, an elegant, refined tannin and a savory Illasi finish. It drinks well on release and improves for several years.
Serve at 16 to 18 °C with half an hour of air. It is built for the middle of the meal: bigoli with duck ragù, roast guinea fowl, fegato alla veneziana, or a board of soppressa and Monte Veronese while the polenta crisps on the grill.
Winery
Corte Canella is a small cellar on Via Canella in Illasi, the easternmost of Valpolicella's great valleys, with guyot trained vineyards at about 210 metres. The range is short and serious: a Valpolicella of fresh grapes called Asante, a superiore raised on partially dried fruit, and an Amarone the house treats as its whole purpose, with a long appassimento, patient barrel work and two further years in bottle before sale. The style across the board favors clean fruit, measured oak and the firm, savory profile that the Illasi valley gives its red wines.
