“Haiku” Toscana IGT 2013
Wine Advocate 92James Suckling 92
Wine Description
Haiku is produced by Castello di Ama, an estate situated at the southern edge of the Chianti Classico zone in Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany, with vineyards ranging from 390 to 530 metres altitude. The wine is a blend of Sangiovese with Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and is classified as a Toscana IGT due to the inclusion of non-native varieties. The 2011 vintage was noted for its forward, open character with dark cherry and plum fruit alongside mocha, smoke and herb notes. Galestro rock and calcareous soils at the estate contribute a mineral edge and natural freshness to the wine. Castello di Ama uses the name Haiku as a reference to the brevity and simplicity of the traditional Japanese poetic form, reflecting a philosophy of directness in the winemaking approach. The wine is vinified at the estate and intended to be approachable in its youth while also offering potential for further development in bottle.
