Sassicaia Bolgheri DOC 2001 – MAGNUM
Wine Description
Sassicaia 2001 is produced by Tenuta San Guido on the Bolgheri coast of Tuscany, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grown on soils with a strong limestone presence, along with areas of marl, pebbles, and clay at altitudes between 80 and 400 metres. The 2001 growing season was particularly favourable, with very little summer rainfall and temperatures consistently above the seasonal average, enabling an early and complete ripening of the grapes. Harvesting began in the first days of September, with the early ripening contributing to full polyphenol polymerisation, rounded tannins, and good sugar concentration in the fruit. Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of around 30 to 31°C, following the estate’s standard practice. Ageing proceeded in French oak barriques for approximately 24 months before bottling, in line with Tenuta San Guido’s established approach for Sassicaia. At over two decades from vintage, the wine has developed tertiary complexity while retaining its structural backbone and fruit character.
