Valpolicella DOC Superiore Classico 2020
Wine Description
Clementi's Valpolicella Classico Superiore is the estate's fuller everyday red from the hills of Gnirega, above Marano di Valpolicella, made from hand picked native varieties, Corvina and Corvinone with Rondinella, Molinara and a little Oseleta. The Superiore designation brings a longer rest in the cellar than the simple Classico, and the house's quiet, natural way of working keeps the fruit clean and the wine digestible.
In the glass it is ripe morello cherry and red plum, dried herbs and a peppery lift, medium weight with polished tannins and a dry, gently saline close. It drinks well on release and across several years. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, opened half an hour ahead, with bigoli with duck ragù, sopressa and grilled polenta, roast poultry or fegato alla veneziana; it is a Valpolicella made for the table rather than the tasting bench.
Winery
Clementi is a small family cellar at Gnirega, a hamlet in the hills of Marano di Valpolicella, in the heart of the Classica zone. The house makes six wines from the native varieties Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara and Oseleta, running from Valpolicella Classico through Superiore and Ripasso to Amarone and a passito, all in the quiet, traditional local manner: hand picked fruit, natural yeasts and unhurried aging. It is Valpolicella at a human scale, from a producer who bottles what the hillside gives rather than what the market asks.
