Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2021
Wine Description
La Collina dei Ciliegi's Amarone brings the estate's high altitude reading of the Valpantena to the appellation's biggest style. The vineyards sit between 450 and 700 metres, organically farmed, and the grapes are the traditional Veronese trio led by Corvina; as is customary for Amarone, the bunches dry for months in ventilated rooms before a slow fermentation to full dryness and aging in oak.
Altitude leaves its mark: dried cherry, plum and sweet spice with cocoa and balsamic tones, but with a cooler line of acidity and perfume than valley floor Amarone usually offers. It is generous on release and rewards a few years of patience. Decant it for an hour and serve at 18 °C alongside braised or roast meats, game, risotto all'Amarone or aged mountain cheese; in Venice it is a natural for fegato alla veneziana with soft polenta at the end of an autumn day.
Winery
La Collina dei Ciliegi was founded in 2005 by Massimo Gianolli in the high Valpantena, the valley north of Verona, around the small restored village of Erbin. The estate farms about 58 hectares between 450 and 700 metres, unusually high ground for the area, and has been certified organic since 2023. Altitude sets the style: reds that keep freshness and perfume alongside Veronese depth. Besides the wines, the family runs the Ca' del Moro wine retreat at Erbin, making the property one of the Valpantena's gathering points for food, wine and walking.
