Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore 2023
James Suckling 93Falstaff 91
Wine Description
Speri's Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore applies the family's organic estate fruit to the most Veronese of techniques: the young Valpolicella is refermented on the warm marcs of the Amarone, as is traditional for the appellation, picking up color, spice and a gentle dried fruit shade without losing its drinkability. The raw material is the usual Speri trio of native grapes led by Corvina, grown on the family's own hills of the Valpolicella Classica and certified organic since 2015.
Expect ripe cherry and plum with clove, cocoa and a soft bitter almond twist on the finish, medium full body and round tannins that keep it an easy companion at the table.
Serve at 16 to 18 °C with bigoli with duck ragù, fegato alla veneziana or roast pork; it is also the natural glass for a risotto made the Veronese way, with Amarone in the pan. Drink on release and over the following several years.
Winery
The Speri family has farmed the Valpolicella Classica since the first half of the nineteenth century and is now in its seventh generation, still working only its own 60 hectares and only the native grapes of the valley. From the base in Pedemonte the family runs a closed cycle: every bottle comes from estate fruit, and since 2015 the entire production is certified organic. The house is a member of the Famiglie Storiche group, and its Amarone from the Monte Sant'Urbano hill in Fumane has long been a reference point for the classical, unforced style of the appellation.
