About Travaglini

History
The Travaglini family has grown vines and made wine in Gattinara since the 19th century. The estate that carries the name was founded in 1958 by Giancarlo Travaglini, who brought new ideas into the vineyard and the cellar. Press accounts credit him with dense planting, picking everything by hand and being among the first in the area to age wine in small oak barrels.
Giancarlo also designed the bottle that made the estate easy to spot. He developed and patented its curved shape in 1958. The family says the curve fits the palm of the hand and catches sediment when the wine is poured, while the dark glass protects the wine from light. Five generations have worked here, and today Cinzia, Massimo, Alessia and Carolina lead the company.
The land and the vineyards
The vineyards are on hills at the foot of Monte Rosa, where cool alpine winds blow over rocky soils of porphyry, granite and iron. The family owns 59 hectares, mostly Nebbiolo. The family says these conditions give grapes with character, fresh acidity and elegant tannins.
The wines
Nebbiolo stands at the heart of the range. There are seven wines: Gattinara DOCG, Gattinara Tre Vigne, Gattinara Riserva, Il Sogno made from overripe grapes, Nebolè, a classic method sparkling wine, Coste della Sesia Nebbiolo, and the red called Cinzia.
Today
The wines are sold in over 46 countries. The family offers tours of the cellar and vineyards at the estate in Gattinara, in northern Piedmont.
