About Tenuta Calimaia / Frescobaldi

History
Tenuta Calimaia is the Frescobaldi family's estate in Montepulciano, and it marks the family's return to the town. An ancestor, Lionardo di Niccolò Frescobaldi, an explorer, writer and merchant, served as mayor of Montepulciano in 1390. The property was acquired under the name Corte alla Flora and relaunched as Tenuta Calimaia in 2021 or 2022, according to press reports. The name recalls the Calimala, the Florentine guild of cloth merchants with which the Frescobaldi were linked.
The land and the vineyards
The estate covers about 70 hectares at Cervognano, an area long known for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Vineyards stand around 300 metres above sea level, arranged in a circle around the hill of Monteliscione. Soils are of Pliocene origin, rich in clay and low in organic matter. Sangiovese, called Prugnolo Gentile locally, leads the plantings.
The wines
The estate makes Tenuta Calimaia, a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and its Riserva, which the producer says develops over time. Viacroce, linked to the Sangiovese of Pieve Cervognano, completes the range.
Today
Calimaia is one of the estates in the Marchesi Frescobaldi group, which looks after vineyards across Tuscany.
