About Sergio Marani

History
Sergio Marani is a family estate in Matelica, in the Marche, making Verdicchio di Matelica. No official website could be found, so the details here come from importers and retailers, and the founding date and family history are not known. One importer notes that the family has used the same oak casks for over fifty years.
The land and the vineyards
The estate farms organically, according to the same importer. Its simpler Verdicchio comes from vines between 10 and 30 years old, while two single vineyard wines come from vines older than 50 years. One of these is Sannicola, a pure Verdicchio from the south facing San Nicola vineyard.
The wines
The basic Verdicchio di Matelica makes up about 40 percent of production. It ferments with native yeasts in 15 hectolitre oak casks, rests a full year on its lees, and is bottled without fining or filtration. The Sannicola cru is reviewed by Jancis Robinson's tasting team.
Today
The estate bottles its basic Verdicchio di Matelica and the two single vineyard wines, and its wines are sold abroad through importers.
