About Lungarotti

History
Lungarotti is the family estate of Torgiano, in Umbria. Giorgio Lungarotti, a pioneer of modern Italian wine, turned the family's farmland into a winery after the Second World War. The first bottles, Rubesco and Torre di Giano, came from the 1962 harvest, and Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio followed in 1964. In the 1970s Giorgio and his wife Maria Grazia opened the Torgiano Wine Museum, an early move into wine tourism. Giorgio died in 1999.
The land and the vineyards
The family farms about 250 hectares. Around 230 are at Torgiano, certified under the VIVA sustainability scheme, and about 20 are at Montefalco, certified organic. The Montefalco property was added around the turn of the century. Both estates work on biodiversity and lower impact farming.
The wines
The house makes the classic wines of both areas. At Torgiano the best known is Rubesco, a Sangiovese based red, with the Riserva Vigna Monticchio, which turned 60 with the 2024 anniversary. At Montefalco the family makes Sagrantino and Rosso. The easy drinking range, Il Pometo, includes Grechetto, Pinot Grigio, a Sangiovese red and a white called Trespo, all under the Umbria IGT, and there is also a sparkling Brut Millesimato.
Today
Three generations now work in the company. Giorgio's daughters Chiara, the chief executive, and Teresa, in marketing, run it with their mother Maria Grazia, and Francesco is export director. The family foundation runs the Wine Museum, MUVIT, in the Palazzo Graziani Baglioni, with over 3,000 objects across about 5,000 years, and the Olive and Oil Museum, MOO.
