About Fratelli Bortolin

History
The Bortolin family traces its roots to 1542. State archives in Treviso record a grower named Zan Bortolin farming seventeen plots in Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene and making wine from them.
The winery in its present form took shape around 1950, when the Bortolin brothers bought their first autoclaves and modern bottling machines to make sparkling wine by the Charmat method, in tanks. Since then they have kept updating the cellar while holding to the old family trade.
The land and the vineyards
The cellar stands in Santo Stefano, in the hills of the Prosecco Superiore zone between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. This is the Prosecco Superiore heartland. Some sources put the family's holding at about 20 hectares.
The wines
The range is built on Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore, made in brut, extra dry and dry styles. The top bottling comes from Cartizze, the small, prized hillside near Valdobbiadene, in a dry style.
Today
Bortolin is a family business that makes sparkling wine on a medium scale, in the range of a hundred thousand to half a million bottles a year, according to the Prosecco consortium listing.
