About Cave Mont Blanc

History
Before 1983, growers in Morgex and La Salle each made and sold small quantities of Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, which gave the wine little presence in the market. Inspired by village cooperation and by Don Bougeat, parish priest of Morgex until 1971, the growers formed an association, the Association des Viticulteurs.
In 1983, with help from the regional government, this became the Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, today Cave Mont Blanc de Morgex et La Salle. It took over its current buildings in 1989 and counts about 80 members.
The land and the vineyards
The grapes grow on mountain slopes between 900 and 1,200 metres, among the highest vineyards in Europe, at the foot of Mont Blanc in the Aosta Valley. Terraces hold the vines, and the cooperative has brought back abandoned plots on the slopes.
The single variety is Prié Blanc, a native Aosta Valley grape that is still grown ungrafted and kept low to the ground. Members tend small plots with care, and the cellar describes its approach as intervening only as much as needed so that the grape can show its character.
The wines
The range starts with the Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, a fresh still white, and moves to classic method sparkling wines, among them the Glacier Pas Dosé. Other lines include Vini Estremi, Progetto Miniere, special bottlings and spirits.
Annual output is about 140,000 bottles, all from this one grape.
Today
The winery stands at Strada des Iles in Morgex. It has also built a high altitude cellar called Skyway, and it lists vinification at altitude as part of its method. Its values, in its own words, are quality, authenticity, freshness and creativity.
