About Bortolin Fratelli

History
Bortolin Fratelli is a sparkling wine house at Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene, in the province of Treviso. It presents itself as made of children of the hills and dates its story to 1542, based on a record in the Treviso State Archives of a grower named Zan Bortolin, who reportedly farmed seventeen plots and made 2,000 litres of wine.
The land and the vineyards
The house sits in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene production area, on Via Menegazzi. A wine guide credits the family with about 20 hectares of vines, used mostly for sparkling wine.
The wines
From 1950 the Bortolin brothers equipped the cellar for Charmat method sparkling wine, buying their first autoclaves and modern bottling machines. Today the range is Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG in Dry and Brut, and Valdobbiadene Superiore di Cartizze. Listings put annual output between 100,000 and 500,000 bottles.
Today
The firm has kept updating its methods and equipment while holding on to the way things have always been done. It is not to be confused with Angelo Bortolin, a separate winery in Guia di Valdobbiadene.
