About Marche Wines
The Marche, on the Adriatic side of central Italy, is above all white wine country, and its grape is Verdicchio. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and the smaller, higher Verdicchio di Matelica give dry whites of structure, citrus and a signature bitter almond finish, and they age well. On the red side, Conero DOCG and Rosso Piceno are built on Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Verdicchio is one of the few Italian whites capable of serious bottle ageing. Matelica, an inland valley, gives tenser, more mineral Verdicchio than the coastal Jesi hills. The rare, lightly sparkling red Vernaccia di Serrapetrona holds its own DOCG. Montepulciano gives the Conero reds their depth and dark cherry fruit near the sea. Long overlooked, the region now offers some of Italy's best value serious whites.
