About Campania Wines
Campania, around Naples and the ancient region of Irpinia, is one of southern Italy's great terroirs for native grapes. Its red benchmark is Taurasi DOCG, made from Aglianico on volcanic and clay soils, a firm, age worthy wine sometimes called the Barolo of the south. Two white DOCGs stand beside it: Fiano di Avellino, textured and nutty, and Greco di Tufo, mineral and taut from sulphur rich volcanic soils. Falanghina rounds out the whites with fresher, citrus driven bottlings. Vineyards climb the slopes of Vesuvius, the Avellino hills and the Amalfi coast, many on ungrafted vines that survived phylloxera in the volcanic sand. Producers such as Mastroberardino helped save these grapes from near extinction in the twentieth century. Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio, red and white, comes from the volcano's own slopes. High altitude and volcanic soils give the wines unusual freshness and length for the latitude.
