Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore “Sottolago” 2022
Wine Description
Sottolago is Tenuta Villa Bellini's Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore, from vines among the marogne dry stone walls at Castelrotto in San Pietro in Cariano. The base blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone and Molinara ferments spontaneously in steel, then goes back over the estate's Amarone marc, the ripasso passage that adds depth and grip. Aging runs about 18 months split between steel tanks and tonneaux, with another twelve months in bottle before release. The wine is succulent and rich but stays elegant: ripe red fruit with dark spice and undergrowth, full body, a dry, polished finish and the acidity to age five to eight years. Give it half an hour of air and serve at 16 to 18 °C with bigoli in duck ragù, fegato alla veneziana, roast guinea fowl or mountain cheeses. It is the estate's most flexible red at the table, and the one to order first.
Winery
Tenuta Villa Bellini lies at Castelrotto, in the commune of San Pietro in Cariano at the heart of the Valpolicella Classica. The property is an eighteenth century estate where the vines grow among old cypresses and marogne, the dry stone walls that terrace these hills. Farming is sustainable and the cellar keeps its habits simple: spontaneous fermentations, patient aging and no rush to release. The range moves from the Valpolicella Teatrino and the superiore Tirele through the ripasso Sottolago to an Amarone raised in wooden vats and French oak.
