About Ca' Marcanda (Gaja)
Ca' Marcanda is a Bolgheri estate in coastal Tuscany owned by Angelo Gaja, the renowned Piedmontese producer who acquired the property in 1996 after years of negotiations—the name roughly translates to 'house of endless bargaining' in local dialect. The estate focuses on Bordeaux-variety blends, producing wines such as Camarcanda, Magari, and Promis from its vineyards in the Bolgheri DOC. It represents Gaja's significant investment in Tuscany, complementing his historic operations in Barbaresco and Barolo.

About Ca' Marcanda (Gaja)

History
Ca'Marcanda is the Bolgheri estate of Angelo Gaja, founded in 1996. The land was unplanted, with olive groves and fruit orchards, and the vineyards went in during 1996 and 1997.
The name comes from a Piedmontese expression for bargaining, and recalls the long talks over the purchase, which one account puts at eighteen trips over two years.
The land and the vineyards
The estate lies at Bolgheri, in the Alta Maremma of Tuscany, with vineyards in the Bolgheri appellation and in the neighbouring commune of Bibbona. The soils are clay and limestone at the foot of the Metalliferous Hills. Sources disagree on the size: the Bolgheri consortium gives about 80 hectares, while an importer gives 300 acres, around 120 hectares.
The vines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the grapes that suit the Bolgheri coast.
The wines
Two wines carry the DOC Bolgheri Rosso name: Camarcanda, a blend in the Bordeaux style, and Magari, which one retailer lists as mostly Cabernet Franc with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot in the 2022 vintage. Promis is a Tuscan IGT red from the estate.
Today
Ca'Marcanda marked thirty years in 2026. The Bolgheri consortium lists it as a member, and the estate remains in the hands of Angelo Gaja, who founded it. Its wines reach buyers through importers in several countries.
