“Super Reds of Italy” Wine Flight

1. Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Selezione Antonio Castagnedi” – Tenuta Sant’Antonio

Founded in 1989 by the Castagnedi brothers, Tenuta Sant’Antonio spans over 100 hectares in the Monti Garbi hills. Their Amarone comes from vineyards in Mezzane di Sotto, where sandy, loamy soil rich in limestone and gravel contributes to the wine’s finesse. The 20-25-year-old vines are cultivated with meticulous care to ensure low yields and concentrated flavors. Aged for 24 months in 500-liter French oak tonneaux, this Amarone combines power and elegance, with deep black fruit, spices, and a long, velvety finish.

2. Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Acinatico” – Stefano Accordini

The Accordini family has been making wine since the early 1900s, and their high-altitude vineyards in Valpolicella Classica contribute to the unique character of this Amarone. The “Acinatico” offers a rich, spicy bouquet, with dominant notes of raisin and black cherry, complemented by hints of dark chocolate and tobacco. Aged in oak, it has a velvety mouthfeel and great aging potential. It pairs beautifully with game, grilled meats, and aged cheeses, making it an excellent choice for those who appreciate complex, structured wines.

3. Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG – Corte Canella

Corte Canella is a relatively young winery, founded in 2009 by Francesco and Adriana in the Illasi Valley. Their Amarone follows a traditional appassimento process, with grapes drying for 70-90 days before slow fermentation. Aged for 36 months in 50% new barriques, followed by an additional two years in bottle, this wine is rich, layered, and full of dark fruit flavors. The winery continues its boutique approach, with their daughter Gloria now leading the marketing and cellar operations. Expect an Amarone with bold yet refined tannins and a lingering, complex finish.

4. Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Marta Galli” – Le Ragose

This Amarone is a tribute to Marta Galli, “La Signora del Vino,” who was named vigneron of the year in 1990. It is a true Riserva, produced in small quantities of only 3,000 bottles per year. Hand-selected grapes from high-altitude vineyards give it a powerful, structured profile, while aging for 7-8 years in oak barrels ensures remarkable depth and smooth, refined tannins. This is an Amarone built for longevity, with a rich palate of dried fruit, spice, and hints of earthy tobacco.

5. Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Riserva “Due Mori” – Ilatium

The Morini family’s winery, Ilatium, is now run by seven brothers and cousins, carrying forward their dedication to traditional Valpolicella winemaking. This Amarone Riserva comes from 30-year-old vines in Mezzane di Sotto, where the clay-calcareous soils and 200m altitude contribute to its complexity. After drying for 100-120 days, the wine is aged for 24 months in French oak followed by 48 months in large barrels, allowing it to develop deep flavors of black cherry, dark chocolate, and spice, with polished tannins and a long, elegant finish.
