About Emidio Pepe
Emidio Pepe is a family-owned estate founded in 1964 in Torano Nuovo, in the Teramo hills of Abruzzo, Italy. The winery is known for its traditional, uncompromising approach to producing Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, using no mechanical intervention, filtration, or additives. Wines are aged for extended periods and are regarded as benchmark examples of artisanal Abruzzese winemaking.
Prices are for take away and shipping. The wine bar serves from its own list.

About Emidio Pepe

History
The winery carries the date 1964 on its own website, and it grew out of the family house in Torano Nuovo, in the hills of Teramo. Emidio Pepe was born in that house, which is now the family agriturismo, and it is where he began making wine. Retailers and wine press trace the family's winemaking further back, to the late 1800s, when earlier generations sold their wine in bulk.
Emidio Pepe died in July 2026 at the age of 94. His daughters Sofia and Daniela and his granddaughters Chiara and Elisa are named in the trade press as the people who have run the family winery for years.
The land and the vineyards
The vineyards lie around Torano Nuovo in Abruzzo and are planted to the region's native grapes. The two oldest plots, called Casa Pepe and Branella, have been vinified separately since 2020. The team worked with the geologist Brenna Quigley to map the soils of both, and the winery says the geology and the genetics of each plot give two clearly different expressions of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
The Selezione Vecchie Vigne comes from vines over 50 years old.
The wines
The estate concentrates on Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and Pecorino. Emidio Pepe was known for ageing his wines and never filtering them, and the winery notes that the waiting time in the cellar before decanting has grown from ten to twenty years. Other sources describe fermentation on native yeasts and ageing in concrete tanks.
The Selezione Vecchie Vigne spends the longest time in the ageing cellar, and only a limited number of bottles are released.
Today
The wines reach the table after long cellar time, so older vintages are part of the range and the winery is known for them. The family continues to farm and bottle in Torano Nuovo, on the same hills where Emidio started.
